SRA033 - Powder flash
This demonstration is a variation on CLEAPSS Supplementary Risk Assessment SRA002 - Dust explosions using cornflour, custard powder, icing sugar, lycopodium powder, etc. Because the demonstration is not conducted in a confined space there is no explosion, simply a flash. It is less dramatic but easier to set up.In this version, a flame source (eg, a lighted wooden splint) is set up above heat-resistant mats. A small amount of coffee whitener (or milk powder) is gently shaken onto the flame. The powder combusts, producing a large flame for a split second. The aim is to demonstrate the amount of energy stored in foodstuffs and/or the effect of particle size on the rate of a reaction.
Note:- These activities are designed to be carried out individually as part of a lesson conducted in a secondary school science laboratory. The procedures are not intended for use in other contexts – for example in a primary school classroom or other non-science or non-school setting.
The activities should not be used to create a ‘whizz bang’ science show.
Experience suggests that using a number of activities one after the other in this way gives rise to unpredictable additional risks which the individual procedures may not manage appropriately.
