PP154 - Using Hope’s apparatus to investigate water density
This activity is designed to demonstrate that water reaches its maximum density at 4°C. This unusual behaviour  relates to hydrogen bonding and explains why ponds freeze from the surface down and not from the bottom up. The use of temperature probes and data logging software injects a new dimension into a (very) old activity.
