Main Duties:
- Equipping the appropriate laboratory with all the apparatus and materials for any practical work needed, assisting /advising staff about the suitability and availability of apparatus
- Checking that all apparatus is working correctly prior to use and that materials have been prepared correctly.
- Setting up laboratory apparatus as requested by the teacher for demonstration purposes, checking that it functions properly and carrying out the demonstration if required.
- Tidying up wherever possible after each practical, removing equipment and any materials that may be left over, and cleaning equipment as required.
- Maintaining stock of apparatus / reagents / consumables and stationery in the stores and laboratories and purchasing replacements as appropriate.
- Maintaining an updated chemical list and consulting appropriate publications for safe disposal of hazardous or expired chemicals.
- Safely disposing of other materials following departmental guidelines.
- Issuing requests to the Maintenance and Operations Department for any work needed in the Science Department.
- Setting up displays and equipment for school open days and supporting extracurricular activities where required.
- Demonstrable familiarity with standard scientific nomenclature.
- Demonstrable familiarity with standard glassware and apparatus normally found in a science laboratory.
- Experienced IT user, especially with Microsoft products, and capable of the preparation and management of basic spreadsheets and databases.

- The UYSC has been delivering an incredible programme of inspiring and engaging science workshops to young people aged 7 to 18 since 2009.
- Workshops range from investigating acids and alkalis and making bath bombs with primary school children, to investigating your own DNA
- Your main role will be to assist with the delivery of these workshops, interacting with the young people who attend.
- Learn to present some of our science workshops to young people in the UYSC.
- Present a 10-minute talk of your PhD research to secondary schools attending the workshops
- Help prepare for each workshop with the rest of the UYSC team, setting up equipment and cleaning up.
